Looking through 'The 45 Most Powerful Images Of 2011' (hover mouse if interested) - I couldn't help but be awed by the sheer power of some images. As a communications student, I was once again convinced of my sometime-wavering commitment to this cause that I believe in. For the pure, raw humanity that was present in the very human expressions of loving and losing and longing that was so present in the photos.

Sometimes this is what makes you fight on, you an insignificant one trying and losing your weakening battle against the largeness of life, trying not to dwell in the lightlessness of lost hope. This one's for everything that I ever believed in and still believe in today, these are my favorites of the year:


Mourning a lost son at the reflecting pools memorial where the Twin Towers once stood. For the ones who lose, the lost will always be remembered. For all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, for the ones that died so that we could live.

The first couple to be registered under the same-sex marriage in Manhattan. For the ones who always believed that laws never made their love any less real. This one's for the ones that are discriminated day after day, for the ones dare not to love openly, for the ones who fight love for the sake of their commitment to their religion - never give up, you are loved.

Christians protecting Muslims from hate crimes and attacks so they may pray in peace. This one nearly made me cry, I must admit. Having seen it for the nth time, this picture still speaks to me on a very, very personal level - that religions that face such animosity on the global level and come together and fight for, not with, each other.

Using pepper spray on a peaceful sit in. This one's for the ones who get lost along the way in the fight for peace, find your way back.

Canine Hawkeye lies vigil beside his slain master, a Navy Seal whose helicopter was shot down. This one's to show that love never dies. Never.

A Chinese boy pays his respects to Steve Jobs at an Apple. This one's for the visionaries that light the way, this one's for the ones leave us too soon. We remember.

Kissing his girlfriend after she was knocked down by police riot-controllers. This one's to show that love conquers all.

For to love, to lose and to remember - this is what makes us human. And we must never forget that.

    SERENE is one of the people who make you who you are, the definition of definition, to borrow a few words. A believer in idealism, she sees the world in photographic moments, quotable quotes and song lyrics.

    Always the hopeless romantic, she is fiercely loyal to those nearest and dearest. She finds joy in the simplest things, and sorrow in the greatest things.

    She loves tennis with a passion, loves lions, loves being under the sun, loves watching the rain, and loves sitting in cafes watching the world go by.

    She lives for most kinds of music, and dreams of a day where old classics come back into time. She lives in a world of yesterday, and believes old-fashioned gallantry is still the way to go.

    Her dreams are big, but her heart will always remain bigger. There's plenty of space for you in her heart so come on in. :)
